While I was having a chat with a great friend of mine, he mentioned that he doesn’t have a website for his business. I was like are you crazy! Turns out he wasn’t as crazy, he just simply didn’t know how a website would benefit him, and for me, with over 6 years of experience in web design can tell you the most important reasons why it’s important to have a website.

So, let’s take a trip down history lane, let’s go back in time, to the 1800s with the invention of telephone technology, it changed how consumers could interact with businesses, they could pick up a telephone book (remember the yellow pages? ;)) flip through it and find a local business to call. This was also great as an advertisement platform for businesses.

Now fast forward to today, in the era of the digital transformation, it has allowed customers to find businesses easier than ever before. Now we have over 4 billion users using the internet. What does this mean for your business? A big opportunity to reach billions of users!

8 Reasons Why You Need A Website For Your Business

All businesses should have a website, no matter what industry you serve as it allows customers to find you easier online to allowing you to take full advantage of digital marketing channels like Search Engine Optimisation, here are 8 reasons why you need a website for your business.

1. People search online for new businesses

Customers looking for your business

Just like before, how anyone could pick up a yellow pages phone book and look up businesses, it’s the same with the internet! Just head to Google and search what you need, and businesses who serve it appear.

This should be no surprise to you, as you probably do it yourself! With approximately 6.5 billion searches being made each day on Google and 97% of people using Google to find more information about a new business before making a purchase or entering a store, and a further 93% of online experiences starting with a search engine.

76% of people who search for something nearby on their smartphone visit a related business within a day and 28% of those searches result in a purchase.

Now that’s a lot of missed opportunity for growth that you are losing by not owning a website!

2. It gives you another marketing channel

Having a website gives you an internet presence, this is a place where you can introduce users to your business, tell them what products and services you sell, tell them how you can help their business and educating them through your blog and plenty more to mention! Your website is like a billboard, though like billboards, you’ll need to attract users to view it! This strongly depends on your digital marketing efforts to get peoples attention by making use of channels like Search Engine Optimisation, content marketing, social media and online advertising.

3. Improves your company credibility

Having a website gives your business more credibility

If your business doesn’t own a website, consumers will have less trust in your business. According to a survey that was conducted in 2018, 75% of people make their judgement about the credibility of a company based on the design of the website, and it only takes them 0.5 seconds to form an impression on your company!

If the design of a website is outdated, clunky and hard to navigate or doesn’t convey what your company is about and how it can help them out then they will leave your website within 5 seconds with a bad impression.

By making sure your website design is updated, and your website conveys what you do and how you can help them within 5 seconds you’ll see an increase in the number of users staying on your website.

4. A website gives you a competitive advantage

Did you know, 6 in every 10 business have yet to own a website? This gives you a massive advantage in your industry to reach more users who are looking for your services and products.

Combine this with digital marketing efforts like Search Engine Optimisation, content marketing and other forms of digital marketing, you will eventually hold a prominent position in your industry where your brand is well known and reputable.

5. Creates better customer engagement and experiences

Owning a website allows customers to better engage with your business, have questions answered quickly and easily order products and services from you. Along with this, you can educate and attract new audiences through the use of content marketing, making an even better experience and educating your customers.

On average there are 63% of customers will find a website and engage with that business put┬áthat with 93% of online experiences that start with a search engine, it’s easy to see why it is important to have an internet presence.

6. Gives you an opportunity to collect data/generate more leads

Data Collection

This is a major great reason alone to have a website as you can collect clients contact information in exchange for a report, ebook or more. Plus it’s a lot easier too!

As an example, trying to get someone to write their email address down on some paper and hand it in is a lot harder than someone typing their email address on your website and getting something for it.

7. Your customers expect you own a website

In the age where everything is digital, it isn’t unreasonable to expect your company to operate a website, think about it, would you trust a business who has a website, or one who doesn’t?

By not having a website, your customers are going elsewhere to purchase services and products. Take a look at this list that showcases what customers expect from a businesses website.

8. Having a website will save you time and money

Think about this, a customer comes to your door and asks you what you are all about, you explain to them what you provide and how you can be of service then they decide to not purchase from you, a waste of time right? Having a website can help presell your customers, they instantly know who you are, what you do and how you can help them.

A website can also help by providing your customers with frequently asked questions and a more quicker way to provide support to your customers.

The conclusion

I would say the benefits of owning a website outweigh the negatives by far! Even if you’re a small bakery in a small village, having a website and being listed on Google my Business is an extremely beneficial way to help customers find you and ultimately come to your bakery to purchase delicious food!
